The New Horizon
Singers perform music from a very wide repertoire.
From Musicals to Mozart, Ballads to Bach,
Swing to Sibelius, Rossini to Rutter and Beethoven to the Beatles -
we love a challenge!
Our all-ladies group sing in unison, two,
three or four-part and often sing very original works by our own
excellent Accompanist Philip Lloyd who composes pieces and arranges works
for us too.
Under the guidance of our Conductor,
Pat Phillips our performances
are often especially tailored to meet the requirements of our many and
varied
audiences. |

EVENT REVIEWS -
2009 |
|
2009 was yet another very successful year for
The New Horizon Singers whose ever-increasing
reputation continues to rise to greater heights
since those far off days of their formation in
2000. |
|
The first major event in 2009 was a
joint concert with The Taunton Deane Male Voice Choir on Saturday, 14th
March 2009. We were again delighted to be able to join in yet
another concert in aid of S.U.R.E. at our regular venue of St James'
Church, Taunton in what is now becoming an annual event in both
our calendars.
This was a wonderful evening with
high-quality contributions from both choirs and featured a stunning
performance by tenor soloist Cameron Rolls who kindly donated his
time. Cameron was accompanied by Nick Thomas on piano, flute
and piano accordian. |
|
Cameron sang a host of well-loved arias
to a delighted audience in magnificant style and we were thrilled that he
was able to join us before returning to London after a brief visit to
his home county of Somerset. Now living in London, Cameron
spends the summer months singing tenor lead roles in major operas all
over Europe with the travelling opera company 'Diva
Opera'. |

|
Nick Thomas also played a variety of
well-known pieces on the flute between the operatic arias and showed just
how accomplished and versatile a musician he was by switching effortlessly
between piano, flute and piano accordian. Nick is Head of Music at
Kingsmead School, Wiveliscombe and we have been fortunate enough to have
had him as a guest soloist in previous concerts.
The second half of the concert showcased
three piano duets by Hazel Reed (TDMVC accompanist) and our own
accompanist Philip Lloyd. Our Conductor, Pat Phillips,
introduced them as surely being the "two best accompanists in the west"
and they certainly proved her right when they performed a wonderful
selection of pieces in a wide variety of styles.
If you were unlucky enough to have missed
this concert, a copy of the programme is shown below.

The annual 'Sing Sankey' evening at
Queens College, Taunton organised by The Rotary Club was the next event on
our calendar. This was the second time that The New Horizon Singers had been invited to sing at
this annual event and we were delighted to be asked to return again by
popular demand to sing alongside the Burnham and Highbridge Silver
Band. The evening gave us an opportunity to showcase some
of our more sacred pieces and to join a very enthusiastic
audience in the singing of some old favourite hymns.
The evening was such a success that we were
asked to perform again at a similar event held by the Bridgwater Branch of
The Rotary Club later in the year. |
|
One of our major performances in
2009 was alongside the City of Bath Male Voice Choir (finalists in
the recent BBC's Last Choir Standing competition) on 4th April at Queens
College, Taunton helping to raise funds for the "Friends of Musgrove Park
Hospital". |
|
Fresh from their success in the 'Last Choir
Standing' competiton, the evening proved to be a very lively one and
it soon became obvious that the City of Bath MVC,with their significant
membership numbers, produced the most amazing sound. Well done to
them.
The New Horizon Singers, however, were more
than able to hold our own and entertained the audience to several pieces
from our own, wide-ranging, repertoire to great acclaim.
The evening also featured a very talented
young soprano Phoebe Fisher who will undoubtedly be one to watch in the
future. (This regular occasion has previously featured a very
young Bryn Terfel). |

|
May brought a very special event when The New Horizon Singers were invited to attend the
opening of the new Beacon Centre at Musgrove Hospital. At
the opening ceremony the choir sang 3 pieces to celebrate the
occasion, "Oh What a Beautiful Morning",
"Now is the Month of Maying" and a blessing,
"The Lord Bless You and Keep You ".
|
| The North Devon 'Festival of Choirs' was the next event in our hectic schedule. With almost the full compliment of choir members in attendance, The New Horizon Singers proudly took their place alongside many other choirs of differing age groups in what was a very lively event featuring a wide variety of music from differing genres. |
| Whilst continuing with our usual support of retirement homes and afternoon groups such as the East Brent branch of the W.I. the over 60s group at Creech St Michael and the Clovermarle Stroke Club, we were also delighted to be invited to perform a concert in aid of Puriton Church, near Bridgwater. This was a new venue for us and we entertained them with a great many favourites from our 'Music from the Musicals' section of our repertoire including a selection from Oklahoma (fast becoming one of our most requested pieces) and Zipadeedoodah! This enabled us to showcase the extensive variety of our repertoire and was a great success in introducing us to an audience a little further afield than our home turf of Taunton. |
Before taking our well-earned summer break, July brought
our own very special annual Summer Concert with guest duo 'Thalia'.
Alex Innis (violin) and Sarah Hornsby (guitar) performed a wide
range of musical styles from Baroque and Classical to South American
Tango and Folk and we were delighted to have them return to perform
again for the third time after a four-year break. Poor summer weather certainly did not deter our audience
as we were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Taunton Deane and by Roy
& Sue Hole plus Geoff & Lyn Gale as representatives of
S.U.R.E. Honoured guests also included the Head of Radio Therapy
Physics from the new Beacon Centre. Please see below for a copy of the evening's
programme.

Bringing another very successful year to a close was The New Horizon Singers' annual Christmas Concert (pictured at the top of the page). Performing again at our regular venue of St James' Church, Taunton we were delighted to be joined by violinist Clare Parsons. In addition to her varied solo performance, Clare very kindly accompanied the choir's performance of 'The Snow' by Elgar and played 'Pachelbel's Canon' whilst the choir sang a version of 'The First Noel'. A copy of the evening's programme is also shown below. |
